Everything you need to know about Pole Spins

If you practice Pole Dance, you’ve probably heard of (or even tried) Pole Spins. Unlike the static mode, this style uses a spinning pole. And if you’re new to the world of Pole Dance and didn’t know: yes, the pole spins!

Although it may seem complex at first, spinning poles can (and should!) be explored from the beginner level, with the right technique and equipment.

In this article, we’ll show you everything you need to know to get familiar with Pole Spins: how it works, the most common (or challenging) moves, and the types of spinning poles available!

What Is Pole Spin?

Unlike the static mode, in which the pole remains stationary, in Pole Spin the pole rotates around its own axis, following the movement of the body (Pole Spin literally means Spinning Pole).

More than just a feature of the pole, spinning is an experience in itself: it expands choreographic possibilities, adds fluidity to combos, and elevates the technical level of transitions.

Performing on a Spinning Pole requires greater balance and body awareness, as it is necessary to control your center of gravity during the spin.

This mode is widely used in both training and artistic performances, as well as competitions, since it creates a more fluid and dramatic aesthetic. Some moves, in fact, are easier to perform in spinning mode than in static mode!

How is the spin speed controlled?

During a spinning pole routine, you use your own body to control the speed of the spin. Of course, physics plays a role, but in short:

  • The farther your body is from the pole, the slower the spin;
  • The closer your body is to the pole, the faster you spin.

Try this out:

  • Climb the spinning pole and get into a cradle/ball seat. Notice how the pole picks up speed, spinning quickly. The entry into the seat makes the pole spin faster, with almost your entire body close to the pole, keeping the spin going.
  • Then, climb the spinning pole and perform a superman seat. You’ll see the pole start to slow down, making the spin smoother/slower. This happens because a large part of your body is farther from the pole.

Main Moves on the Spinning Pole

Beginners on the spinning pole usually start with basic moves adapted for the spinning mode, such as:

  • Fireman Spin – A simple spin with the legs hugging the pole;
  • Chair Spin – A spin with the legs in a chair-like position;
  • Back Hook Spin – One of the most popular spins, performed backward instead of forward.

More experienced practitioners venture into complex moves that require strong core strength and mastery of the spin, such as:

  • Jade Split Spin – A true display of flexibility and technique;
  • Iron X Spin – Already a symbol of strength and control in static mode, it becomes even more impressive on the spinning pole;
  • Phoenix Spin – A dynamic transition between different figures, requiring technical mastery and fluidity in movement.

Each of these moves comes to life differently when performed on a spinning pole, providing fluidity and a beautiful visual effect for spectators.

Which Pole Should You Use for Spinning?

To practice this discipline, it’s essential to have a spinning pole with an efficient locking system and smooth rotation that doesn’t catch or stop mid-performance.

Ideally, choose models that allow you to switch easily between spinning and static modes without tools. This makes training easier and provides much more creative freedom!

The spinning pole must offer both resistance and fluidity. If it gets stuck or has uneven spots, it can compromise both safety and performance.
